Well I am sure all of you must be surprised by the title of this post. But then its soon going to happen and yeah definitely Ranji-can't. Well with no offence meant, all I mean to say is that our superstar cannot show off his trademark hand waving act with the cigrette any more on the screen.
In an out come of hasty decisions made by the center on the No-tobacco day, the centre has passed out an order banning the appearance of any tobacco products on the big screen and in the small screen too. The center has passed on strict orders to the states to stop showing any tobacco products in movies from August this year. And a flash message saying that tobacco is injurious to health is supposed to be flashed across the screen when scence with appearance of tobacco products from movies made previously are screened.
Well to me it more or less seems like an april fools joke. The announcement not only seems to be frivolous but also reflects the extent of ignorance of the politicians in India. I would have rather appreciated if the government had taken a stronger stand and rather banned the sale of all tobacco products with in the country. When the government can ban the sale of gutkas is it going to be impossible for it to ban the sales of tobacco and alcohol. Well it won't. The major reason being that the government earns a huge amount of revenue in terms of taxes through the sale of alcohol and cigrettes. Secondly the companies that sell these products have enough money to cough up the politicians so that they can continue to choke up the public by selling their products.
Its high time we realise that habit of drinking and smoking existed even in the olden days when the country was ruled by the kings. There did not exist any 'media' during this period and yet drinking of 'somabanam' and smoking was prevalent at time. The move by the government dose not seem to have any motive towards banning of smoking but rather an unpresented move by against the visual-media due to the short thinking of some 'chindi' politician.
Well whether it decreases the number of smokers or not, the enactment of this rule is going to dishearten many actors. Our superstar henceforth cannot smoke on the screen. But then our star off-late has had a cosmetic surgery done on his lips and would have any way not smoked. His latest movie Chandramukhi did not have a single scene in which the star smokes or has any special style, unlike his usual movies.
Just imagine Rajnikanth popping up the cigrette onto his mouth and then you see a flash message on the screen- 'Smoking is injurious to health'.
But then nothing can stop our unimitable superstar, he has always come up with his new style and loosing the smoke-stick won't make him crippled.

I HATE SMOKERS!!!!
according to me shoot all of them. well, fantasies aside, i think if the govt cannot ban smoking, they should have a set of rules, most imp no smoking in public. they can smoke away like chimineys at their homes, for all i care. aside from killing themselves, they make us inhale that terrible smoke.
yes it is a BIG joke that msgs like tobacoo is bad for health are flashing in adds.
thats something thats very puzzling abt humans, they know that something is bad for them, but they jus go ahead and do what they plz...
ha ha.. well know what it is officially banned to smoke in public places in india,, all over the country.. its been effective since an year and yet no use.. not strictly enforced....
btwn.. u smoke or not its ur personal choice.. as i said if govt really cases abt ppl healt why not close down all tobacco companies and wineries..
Well Said Vishy.... rather than attack the bigger picture and ban smoking , they have banned it "on-screen". Nothing short of ridiculous.
On-screen antics apart, smokers suck...;) in that way here it's a lot better where ppl cannot smoke with 12 feet of any Tech building ..and no smoking in normal shops..only in bars and pubs etc etc... and shops have to be licensed to sell tobacco... lots of good things.... but dunno if it has any effect on reducing the smokers.. but defly does reduce the perils of passive-smoking...
yep i was aware abt the no smoking in public. but jus this morn i could not wait at my bus stop for my bus, but h ad ato stand a mile away coz there was this idiot standing right there smoking away to his death. what i meant was that rules need to be enforced and reinforced.
as u said its a personal choice, so to hell with those dumb ppl.
as far as alcohol is concerned, it is used in ways more than one. what i mean is that it is used in medicines. and in cold places alcohol is used to keep warm...so i guess, u cant entirely shut down all those manufacturing plants. but, yes shut down all those bedi factories....definately.
btw... real neat write-up...liked it a lot!!!
Dei maams...the issue is very relavant..but the comments made me grin... ranga, smokers puff, dont suck...if they suck, they are dead dude...
And chetna, u dont have to stand a mile away..u just have to stand in the opp direction of the wind to tht person. As a person who has smoked more than anyone of u, albeit passively, in the last 22 yrs...(i have been associated with smokers all through), i do tend to evaluate them in a not-so-critical way. "they know that something is bad for them, but they jus go ahead and do what they plz... " thats whats human..u juz dont give a damn and choose to do what u please...and its not easy to come out of a habit. I have witnessed it first hand - a plight of a smoker..

yeah the beedi really needs to be shut down.. involves child labour too.. but then it isasource of livelihood for many ..and thts why the govt has let them thrive.. it atlest knows tht it is not goin to do nething to improve them.. so probly abstained itself from crubbing the livelihood.. btwn recently a Man was shot in Rajastan..for chwing tobacco.. the ban was enforced there recently.. but then it was more of a dadagiri than.. a concern for the public health..
RA, i am allergic to the smoke and the smokers, might be more of a psychological block, but i start coughing badly and get a headache....
habits are hard to break, yes, but they can be broken....
I know if u really want to, nothing is impossible..but I have seen a classic example of a smoker of 41 years, having had brain tumour due to smoking 12 years back, and an artificial tube inside his body, still smoking 10 cigs a day (used to be 40 at peak). And I know when he was forced to be bed-ridden for 6 months after his surgery, was akin to a mad person. You know where he went after he cud barely walk! The side effects of leaving smoking are much graver than u might think.. And even today, if u ask him to quit smoking, all u will get is a "No problem, I have quit smoking a 100 times". But in a more sober mood, he does admit that he has lost the power to stop it, even though his career in the medical line made him fully aware of the ill-effects of smoking. Its probably not a good description of my dad, and definitely not a way I would like to portray the gem of a person, but what I want to emphasise is that its very easy to be critical of people, but very tough to empathise with them..
I do advice ppl to quit smoking at every opportunity, and I do know of smokers who have given up smoking due to various reasons, majority of whom quit after marriage. So its still comparitively better. But u shud realise not everyone is in a position to do so.
Btw, if u do get cough and headache, u better be very careful. Im sorry for u.. On the lighter side, i find it hard that u can adjust to the chennai vehicular smoke but not cigarette smoke. Well, I can very easily stand those, but I get suffocated by talcum powder and incence sticks!

Oops!!! I am sorry if i touched a raw nerve here. Yes i cannot empathise with ppl who complusively smoke, coz i probably can never understand y ppl get into smoking or drinking or taking drugs. i dont even want to try to.
I have no choice but to adjust to Bangalore's air pollution, but i most certainly dont like that too. and i wouldnt say its better than inhaling tobacco smoke but then i will jus have to stop doing everything i do. thankfully not every person in this world has resorted to smoking, that would drive me crazy.
oh, i dint know u were in blore...was ther a coupla months bak (to meet u know who) and I would probably rate it much worse than chennai! Atleast chennai got the heat to scatter away the smoke. I do want smokers to stop, but im not totally against them. "Paal kudikkara kozhandaikkellam beer taste eppadi puriyum?" Anywayz, live clean and live long! Blore sucks..(how many times have u been to forum btw?)

Hmmm... interesting discussion out here... And a pretty good take at the situation by RA. To sum up what he said, chetna, change ur motto from "I HATE SMOKERS" (ur first comment) to "I HATE SMOKING"... Smoking is a public issue and a grave health concern, agreed. A ban on this thing, yes, is much needed. But not with our govt's current economical situation, as viswa said. I dont find it wise either, to abolish a product altogether in the market, as it defies the concept of democracy. To restrict its usage to/from specific areas, yes, that can be done. But who will abide to that? I would rather want to see a "Dont mess with india" policy on public littering first. Wait, I am digressing... thats an entirely different issue on law-keeping in our country...
To give a flash on what I think abt smoking, it roots in a person not when he is all "aware" of it. It, more often than not, appears in his teens, when he starts out "trying this thing" with a bunch of his friends behind a "shady shed". Before he realizes, his nicotine requirements would have gone upto a pack a day easily. At this point, to quit it, what does it demand? Will power! Not in grams and kilos, but in tons... If every one had so much of that...!!!!
I am not saying no one has it... My grandpa is a classic example for me to show one who has it. He quit smoking from a pretty "strong" level. Its just like what takes a diabetes patient to stop having sugary items, coupled with the addiction of nicotine...
Thus, solution? Never start. To be honest, I have tried out a few during my BTech, but didnt find anything "interesting" in it. What can be done, according to me, is to have a freedom of speech at home. In my sample size of 38 (my BTech class) those kids whose parents were pretty open never resorted to any such thing. I think thats is an area to give thought to, whether being psychologically open with one's parents will help someway.
The thought process that goes in me right now is that, during one's teens, the most critical factor is a person's circle of friends. If parents can be his/her prime friend, and help him atleast out of his teens and help him reach a "sane" age, I believe situation would improve. It is something which we must all keep in mind and is worth a try. To be free with your kids doesnt seem to require the "ton" of will-power. The "elderly" chauvinism must disappear. Because, stopping/regulating cigarettes from the market et al., are not directly under our control. More over, eradicate cigarettes and a new habit will crop up. Humans evolve, in all aspects ;).
This is my "bit" to the issue. Well done viswa, in bringing this topic into notice. Thalaivar Rajini once again raised a "mass" issue :))..... Repeatu...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4598829.stm
The above link gives BBC's take on the issue. Pretty much compares with what we have been talking, but from the mouths of "giants"...
What you said is right Sree, that smoking as an issue should be attacked not the smokers themselves. But when I get to know that some person who I know smoke, immediately my immpression of that person changes and I can't really help it.
And RA, Foroum is ok, been there just twice. I guess if people are interested in looking at well /skimply dressed, its a good place. Or you need to be extermly rich to shop there. Well, my fav is Landmark... I can spend a whole day there. :)
"Dont mess with india" - I really liked that...You also made a very good point on how anti-smoking can be inculcated rather than enforced. I sure wish I cud do my bit when the time comes!
And I juz went to forum 10 times in 7 days with 5 diff ppl when i was ther...not once to look at the skimpy babes..(if ever Ms. J gets to read this) though i wud say much better avg quality than chennai gals...defn not wrt character! And yeah, I liked landmark too.. though I probably spent a little more time in Transit than there. Frustrated to say the least!

Yes, Chetu, I can understand that mental block. I had that until I joined my B.Tech course where I found out that lots of my friends smoke, and that it was never reflected on their character. Moreover, after having come to US, I added "drinking" also to that dont-judge-by-this list.
Of course, things are different if a guy smokes beside you even after knowing your displeasure or if he forces you etc etc.. That, I agree, is to be hated. But my buddies have been decent enuf for not doing so. Its just like forcing a veggie to eat non-veg, for what-so-ever reasons.
Hey RA,
I am not sure if u are aware of the "Dont mess with Texas" policy, which is what the Texas State calls their anti-littering policy. I just loaned those words.
Abt Forum, at the outset, yes ooo a place to be. But the thing is I see artificiality all over! Esp, I cant stand that "bommai" girl with all the make up selling working for some make-up company, as soon as u enter the place. The only thing I bought from (near) Forum is a piece of corn-on-cob from a street vendor outside!!
Chetu, is Landmark the one near Madiwala? If I waited enuf I cud have caught a glimpse of Ganguly (he was supposed to open some new store).. but who cares for Daada? Let him get back to form and I will see :). Anyways, this place had a lot more to offer. I had a hearty lunch at the MTR outlet :).
Of course, I was startled to see a KFC outlet in there!!
Vanakkam! Vanakkam! Vanakkam!
Money or Honey, Wine or Women, Pride or Pleasure, Good or Bad ...
i think none of these things can be forced or enforced. Every individual has his own stimulus towards these things that gets regulated by external supports like availability and acceptability.
Narcotics is banned...People know ways to get it.
Prostitution is banned...Still easy for the daring.
etc...
U cant ever stop me from doing things that bother u or me, unless i think so.
Pi(s)tu
if we do ROOT-Cause-Analysis for this SMOKE problem, it will endup in an individual's stimuli (weakness or strength, will differ).
So any kind of ban that would essentially reduce the reachability and knowledge will do good for the expected.
Lets say "HI" to the ban, eventhough we know its a political stunt.
Pi(s)tu
Sorry sreeram, I aint juz another "US" guy...infact im right opposite! So Texas, Ohio or Chicago will probably sound the same to me.
And Pi(s)tu , ur comments just went ovvvvvvvvvvver my head...

Sreeram ,Landmark is a book store in Foroum. It has other branches, where, I am not too sure abt that.
u might be surrounded by great guys who smoke, they might have no other flaw in their character other than this one thing, but they very well know it will kill them one day, y do they still keep doing it? they are young and can come out of this habbit, sooner the better.
i probably would have to tolerate ppl whom i know and who smoke, but forunately until now i have had no such person in my life.
and as far as the charaters of gals in bangalore are concerned, plz dont judge by the gals u see on MG road or Forum. i would say there are all kinds of gals in all places. jus coz they dare to dress boldly doesnt mean that they have no morals.... :). i can show u loads of gals in bangalore who dress in a conservative fashion jus like how gals in chennai are believed to dress .
Vishy, u need to thank me.... i hope u know the reason y ;-))
so, Ms. A in blore huh vishy? You never tell me stuff da..! Anywayz, Im sorry to generalise, but my opinion was truly based on my short stay and all I can say is that dress doesnt determine a person, but attitude does.
And curious to note, u objected to my description of the character, but never to my compliment on their looks! Isnt it generalization as well? mmmmmm...
If I say chennai figs are gumm, its not that I know everything about all the chennai gals, its just my opinion from my experiences. And chennai gals are gummmmmm :)

Great post.....completely agree with the smoking issue....people die of second hand smoke nowadays...no fault of their own!!!
Landed on your blog randomly.....certainly an interesting read!!!
dei Ra ur logic is pathetic da.. why wld Chetana thank me if M/S A was in blore da. dei Ra there is no stuff to tell da.. my slate is pretty clean..
well Chetana I hope I have figured out the reason, we'll chat abt it l8r.. and Chets I must also thank u for another reason.. for telling Karthik abt A.. hes been constantly bugging me for the last few days.. asking abt A.. and not letting me sleep.. but then don't let the cat out of the bag.
read it properly da..."Vishy, u need to thank me.... i hope u know the reason y ;-))". So my assumption is still valid and I was right abt Ms A cos u had put it in black and white yourself!
